Mi Mexico Restaurant, Burnaby

Posted by Jeremy under: BC; Business; Entertainment; Personal; Vancouver; restaurants .

My girlfriend and I love Mexican food but there aren’t a lot of good Mexican restaurants in Vancouver, particularly where we’re living in Burnaby (at least not that I’m aware of).

Last week I was watching Shaw’s channel 4 and they mentioned Mi Mexico Restaurant on Hastings in Burnaby. The show’s host brought a guy into the restaurant and had him try a number of Mexican dishes, which all looked great. The “random guy” said he really enjoyed the food.

Since watching the show, I’ve been wanting to take Bridget there and tonight was the perfect night, no food in the house, it’s right around the corner, she’s home late from work… so I called Mi Mexico twice and the phone just rang and rang. I couldn’t find a website listing their hours of business and being a Monday it’s likely closed. I finally came across a listing on Craigslist that has Mi Mexico’s information. Here’s the blurb they posted about themselves on Craigslist:

Mi Mexico Restaurant offers a Mexican cuisine in a friendly and relaxing dining environment with fresh Homemade Mexican food that you can enjoy. This is the place to go and get authentic Mexican food . Mexican food combines all of these fine cuisines to create some of the best tasting food.Authentic salsas ,we make our salsas fresh and homemade right here in Mi Mexico. We hope you will come to consider us a favorite among Mi Mexico restaurants.

You’re absolutely right- there aren’t enough good Mexican restaurants in Vancouver.

You might be interested to know that a couple of Powell Riverites opened an authentic Mexican spot called “La Casita” in Gastown; it’s the second of its kind, the first in PR.

As a big fan of Mexican fare, I can confidently endorse La Casita. The experience is always very authentic (not too flashy, just like Mexico) and the food is great.

I’m looking forward to your review of Mi Mexico.

Jordan - I’ll definitely check out La Casita for lunch one day when I’m in the office. Thanks for that!

Well, not sure if they are remotely related or not, but I’ve been to two Mi Mexico’s here in Lexington, Ky. Both were terrible. I hope you don’t have the same experience. :)

Hey Deron,

I’m sure they’re not related. We did visit Mi Mexico about a month ago and it was alright. The server was nice and the food was okay. Notice I didn’t write a rave review…but I was hoping to get a chance to visit once more because we showed up right before they closed on a weeknight. Love your site btw.

I, and several friends go to Powell River and all of us love the food at La Casita. It is the same people who opened the one in gastown. We are right now planning a date to go there. The one in Powell River is excellent, I’m sure this one will match it.

Hey Jeremy,

Sorry I didn’t respond sooner. I usually am pretty good about checking the sites that I comment on and replying back if the author responds. I guess I let this one get away from me.

Glad your experience was way better than my experience with Mi Mexico. At least you’ll know if you visit Lexington to stay away from the ones here. ;) Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever had any good Mexican here in Lexington.

Thanks for the compliments on my site. I appreciate it.

Mi Mexico Restaurant is not the same one that is in states, this one much better coming from Mexico to Canada I couldn’t find a good Mexican restaurant. I was going to work I saw Vancouver Sun newspaper Mi Mexico Restaurant I said I had to try it out, since that I travel about hour because there’s nothing like it. Their customer service is best and all their servings are authentic Homemade Mexican food. I would really recommend this restaurant to anybody that Love Mexican food.

Hi Jeremy,

Mex restaurants are indeed rare in Vancouver. I don’t much care for mex restaurants operated by non mexicans, as the spices and everything seems wrong.

Try Red Burrito on Commercial Dr. (and 1st st.) It is actually operated by people who are from Mexico, and you cannot go wrong. It is a small fast food kind of place, but worth your visit.

I have not visited the place in gastown, but will check it out.

@Steve: I’ve driven past Red Burrito on Commercial a number of times (First Ave used to be my commute when I had an office downtown) but have never stopped for a bite. If I’m ever in the neighborhood I’ll check it out.

I’ll have to do a review of this one. Do NOT dare do Red Burrito or I’ll dis-own you as a friend, Jeremy, hehehehe (I am just kidding).

La Casita does not appeal to me. But Salsa and Agave for sure (Yaletown) — we should do lunch there sometime!
